Pictures of the Black Skirt Tetra
When I firstly saw the Black Skirt Tetras, I decided to keep them. Of course, I asked about the conditions and requirements for this fish. The Black Skirt is very nice, beautiful and peaceful. Their origin is the South Amercia; Rio Negro. As the name „Rio Negro“ says, the water where they come from, is usually dark. Dark colours are the result of decomposition of wood and relatively slow water current. Your tank should contain at least one driftwood and enough of plants. Good solution is to use Anubias Nana, Vallisneria Spiralis, Vallisneria Gigantea and some kind of Cryptocoryne. Even though these plants don’t come directly from Rio Negro, they are easy to care for.
Acid or alkaline water isn’t any problem for the Black Skirt Tetra. The same goes to the question of hard or soft water. Generally, this species adapts easily, but don’t overrate them. Keep the conditions stable, so your fish will be happy. If the water is of good quality, you’ll be a successful breeder of Black Skirt. Generally, males are a little bit darker than females. There are no differences between sexes if you focus on their aggression of their territorial behaviour. Females are chasing males and backwards. If you want them to breed, make sure that there is no fish which could eat the eggs, since the Black Skirt are an egg layer.
Their behaviour varies between very curious and very shy. They tend to be shy if your aquarium is hidden somewhere in the corner. If you walk in front of your tank all day long, they will not hide during feeding. Anyhow, it’s necessary to keep them happy and it doesn’t rely on the things like shy behaviour or so.
Personally, I recommend you to keep them in the species tank. You’ll be very happy, because they look very terrific and they are good for a beginner as well as for an experienced aquarist. I keep them in the community tank with Guppies, Glass Bloodfish and with some catfish. Don’t forget to buy at least 6 Black Skirt Tetras, since they do well in groups. 1 fish per 1 litre is enough, since they’re community fish.
